From Mt. Rainier, we drove about 4 hours over the Olympic National Park. Here we stayed at an inn near the park called Kalaloch Lodge. This lodge sits only the Pacific Coast. Like the other National Park location, it is very remote - almost an hour to the nearest town - with no in room phone or tv, no cell service, and no wifi.
My blog posts for our three nights in Olympic NP will be organized by places we went, not by days. For example, we went to beaches every day, but I put them all in this post. It was easier for me to put it together this way.
After we drove from the Mt. Rainier area about 4 hours away, we were ready for a walk on the beach. This beautiful beach was right in front of the lodge.
Here you can see Kalaloch Lodge in the distance from the beach. The beach is covered in driftwood and logs. It makes for a very dramatic landscape!
We found lots of sand dollars, crabs (shells only), and clam shells on the beach. Someone else had collected this starfish, and it was the only one we saw. There are amazing tide pools along this coast, but we didn't see any on the beaches we went to.
Each night I saw an amazing sunset from our lodge.
On another day, we went to Rialto Beach. This beach had lots of driftwood and views of offshore islands called sea stacks. The clouds were so menacing on this day!
And we also checked out Ruby Beach. You can see some people in the photo below to show the scale of the size of boulders.
Another gorgeous sunset from the hotel...
The "tree of life" was close to our lodge along the beach. This tree is hanging on with its roots, even though all the surrounding dirt and sand have eroded away. It was really cool, making a cave underneath its roots.
And on our last night there, Michael and I took a nice beach walk in the evening WITHOUT the kids. One of the amazing things we saw while staying at the Kalaloch Lodge were bald eagles in flight! We saw them on our first night there, and on our last. So incredible!
I loved staying a few nights by this incredible coastline!
Up next... the Hoh Rain Forest.
