The Wednesday Hodgepodge

Hey y'all!  Whew, re-entry is hard!  I have been back in town for over a week now, but I still feel like I'm catching up.  It is so fun to have Jack at home, and we have been out shopping for furnishings for his apartment.  I've also been organizing and repacking some of his moving boxes.  Add in more cooking, going to the Y together and watching movies in the evening, and the blog has taken a backseat lately!  Hopefully today will be the new beginning for regular blog content.

2014 - sitting in the cockpit after our flight home from England

1. August 19th is National Aviation Day...do you like to fly?

Yes, I like to fly because I like to travel.  On the other hand, I frequently comment that flying is not much fun anymore.  Going on an airplane used to feel like a little luxury.  Now it feels crowded, unpredictable, delayed, and sometimes unpleasant.

Last time you were on an airplane?

In June, we flew to Nashville.

The date is chosen in honor of the history and development of aviation, and celebrated on the birthday of Orville Wright. Have you ever been to the Kitty Hawk area of North Carolina? The city of Dayton in Ohio (their birthplace)?

I haven't been to either of these places.

2. In what area of your life do you tend to 'wing it'? Is this an area you
should be winging?

I tend to wing it when it comes to packing.  After packing for so many trips, I have perfected my system for fitting everything into a carry-on bag.  I don't have to think about it much, and usually pack the night before.  I keep my toiletries bag packed and ready to go, so it is just a matter of finding mix and match tops and pants.  My all time record is packing for our 10 day trip to Switzerland in a carry-on suitcase.

You can see a post about packing my travel toiletries bag here and here.

3. A favorite book, song, or movie that relates to flight in some way?

Songs like Fly Me to the Moon and Come Fly with Me make me think of my grandparents.  My grandfather was a pilot in WWII

Mollie enjoying her first pup cup last week

4. Soft serve, gelato, sherbet, frozen yogurt, or good old fashioned ice cream...what's your pleasure? Your favorite flavor? How often do you indulge?

Ice cream is never a bad idea!  I like all of the above, except I could probably pass on the sherbet.  My favorite flavor is mint chocolate chip, with cookies and cream being a strong contender.  I really like almost any flavor, except ones that are too fudgey/chocolatey.  I'm a vanilla gal!

5. I never get tired of______________________.

The library!  Of course, I am still volunteering at the library.

This photo popped up in my memories showing Jack at the library where I volunteer.  The bottom photo was in the newspaper back in 2008, and the top photo was from the summer that he volunteered at the library in 2016.  And today 10 years later, in a full circle moment, Jack got a library card for his time at home.  He is really into watching old movies, and is enjoying all the dvd's that the library has to offer.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Amy sent me the sweetest note and personalized ornament/display.  This was so, so thoughtful and the best surprise in the mail.  I will always treasure this reminder of him!

Our vet sent this card, and it literally took my breath away to see Albie's paw print.  Another thing I will always keep and treasure.

We are still missing Albie lots, and I think Mollie is too.  She is not eating much, and I am trying to switch up her food to see if that helps.  She has lots of energy, so I am not worried too much right now.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, friends!

  1. I think it's hard for dogs who are used to the company of another dog. If I'm traveling somewhere that isn't remote my motto is 'whatever I forgot I'll buy there'. I'm glad you're enjoying having Jack in the house. Are you hiring movers for the trip north?

  2. Enjoyed reading your answers. Sorry for the loss of your dog. I'm sure it's hard. I probably don't wing it as much as you when packing but like Joyce said, if we're going somewhere with shops I don't worry too much about forgetting something if I know I'd be able to buy it wherever we're going.

  3. I think you hit the nail on the head about why flying is more of a pain these days. It's all the stuff surrounding it that makes it not fun. Plus the way too small seats on airplanes.

  4. Agree with your answer to question 1- flying used to seem like a luxury. I fly mostly on discount carriers and there’s definitely not the feeling of luxury! I know what it’s like up soak in the time with your young adult! It sounds like it’s been a good time with him. How neat that he has a library card!

  5. It’s tough on cats when they lose their dog sister as well. They're family! It’s been five months since our dog passed, and my cat become depressed and very sick. I was so concerned. Not her, too! She's been diagnosed with a thyroid condition and a UTI and finally after a rough 5-6 weeks, she is doing well and back to her bossy self.
Our vet did the same thing with the paw prints - what a tearjerker that was when I received it.
II could care less about flying these days, but thinking back, it’s all the changes since 9/11 that I don’t enjoy. Before that, it was fun and exciting. Now, airports just seem to get worse, more issues, more hassles and friends who travel often share the same complaints. Plus, they just keep getting bigger and more crowded. Oh, I'll fly again but I won't like it.

  6. That card from the vet is so thoughtful! I just printed out information this week for Brook to get a library card here. I want to start going there more.

  7. Oh, you should frame the paw print. I would have teared up at seeing that. So, so thoughtful. Oh no, now I am worried about Mollie. Is she enjoying Jack being home? Full circle moment with Jack at the library and that is so fun!

  9. It sounds like you have had a lovely time with Jack being home.
How cool to get to go into the cockpit of a plane on your flight home! Oh wow! You sound amazing at packing!
Mint chocolate chip is a good flavour!
Aww! That was such a lovely gift, a sweet way to remember Albie. Sending love and hugs.

  10. What precious reminders of Albie and what a sweet throwback photo of Jack! There's something about the library that is so comforting. It's definitely one of my favorite places, too. I'm jealous of your ability to pack so quickly and so thoroughly. I will be reading your past posts to learn more! Thanks for the tips!
