After our stay in Carlsbad, we headed out to see a few more national park areas. We drove about an hour for a quick hiking stop at Guadalupe Mountains National Park, which is actually back in Texas. This area is so remote, with nothing but empty space for miles around. Camping is offered, but no rv hookups. It was a great stop to explore this isolated corner of Texas.
Driving over to GMNP, we could see the mountains rising up from the desert. I felt like I was in an old western movie, and could imagine wagon trains, stagecoaches, native americans, cowboys, and cattle. In fact, there is an old stagecoach station at the entrance of the national park.
This isn't the best picture, but just wanted to document our awesome rental car. Last year we took our truck on our epic Thanksgiving roadtrip to Tennessee. This year we decided to rent a car to save the wear and tear on our own vehicles. The weekly rate was so reasonable, the gas mileage was great, and Michael scored an upgrade to this fancy Chrysler 300. It was lots of fun!
We hiked up a gently sloping mountain trail. It was SO windy in this area!
There is beauty in the desert! We just missed the leaves changing colors in this area by a few weeks.
We told the kids they could hike ahead of the old fogey's...ha, ha!
Michael got these hiking sticks a while back and really enjoyed using them on the trail. His knees are still bothering him, even after getting his torn meniscus cleaned up a few months ago in one knee. So he was a real trooper to do all this hiking. Aleve was his best buddy! I love this picture of him!
Guadalupe Mountains National Park was a great stop on our way through New Mexico. We visited the information center for those all important "passport" stamps and hiked around for about an hour and a half. From there, we drove through El Paso and headed north to White Sands National Park.
